Product overview

About product

Compact and lightweight an outstanding walk-around lens Canon's EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a great entry into the world of EOS prime lenses. With an 80mm effective focal length on APS-C cameras, 50mm on full-frame cameras, it's an excellent prime lens for portraits, action, even nighttime photography. It's bright maximum aperture of f/1.8 helps it not only to excel in low light but also to capture gorgeous, sharp images and movies with beautiful background blur thanks to its circular 7-blade design. An updated lens arrangement with new lens coatings helps render images with excellent color balance, plus minimized ghosting and flare. Performance is brilliant, with a stepping motor (gear-type STM) to deliver near silent, continuous Movie Servo AF for movies plus speedy, smooth AF for stills. A redesigned exterior with improved focus ring placement makes manual focus adjustments a breeze. Canon's most compact 50mm lens, the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM has a rugged metal mount, plus an improved minimum focusing distance of 1.15 ft. (0.35m) and a maximum magnification of 0.21x. Offering sharp performance for the best in movies and stills, it's a fixed focal length gem—the perfect lens for photographers and moviemakers to expand the creative possibilities with their EOS cameras.

Features we like

The rear of the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens, The only other control on the lens barrel is a focus mode switch with the usual AF/MF settings. Note that this lens offers full-time manual focusing even when AF is selected.

Chromatic Aberrations, Chromatic aberrations, typically seen as purple or blue fringes along contrasty edges, are impressively well controlled with this lens - the examples below show the worst-case scenario.

Light Fall-off, With the lens wide open at f/2.8, you can see some obvious light fall-off in the corners, but distortion is very well controlled.

Affordable, fast, fun!
Everybody knows about the nifty fifty! It's a wonderfully small prime lens that has a fast aperture for a cheap price. The STM variant does seems quite a bit better from the previous version. I have used this lens on my Canon T3, T5i, and now my R8.

nifty 50
Brilliant for the price. Cannot even compare it to a kit lens, quality is just so much better.great for an amateur photographer to learn with and start seeing how your camera works. Wish it came with a little lens cover/sunshade or even a little lens bag like the competition does.

Seems like most lists of must have lenses have this one on their list. I am not disappointed. Haven't had a chance to use it much yet.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM
I bought this camera lens specifically for astrophotography. I didna won't to spend more money than necessary as I'm no keen expert. Using this with a Canon DSLR and an Ioptorn skyguide pro, I was able to achieve proper wide angle images of the night sky.
