The Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter lets you connect Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 devices — such as external hard drives and Thunderbolt docks — to any of the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports on your MacBook Pro.
As a bidirectional adapter, it can also connect new Thunderbolt 3 devices to a Mac with a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port and macOS Sierra.
In addition, it can be used to connect Thunderbolt-enabled displays — such as the Apple Thunderbolt Display and LG Thunderbolt 2 displays — to any of the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports on your MacBook Pro. However, using this adapter with an Apple Thunderbolt Display requires a power source, because the display does not provide power through the adapter.

Works perfectly
It does what I bought it for. I have a 6 year old LaCie external drive that has a Thunderbolt 2 cable. I have a new iMac with 2 Thunderbolt 3/4 ports. I want to use the LaCie drive with my new iMac.
Plugging dongle to dongle works
I have FW800 devices I use in Audio Editing. Plugging my FW800 devices into my Thunderbolt 2 dongle and then this dongle worked great. No loss in speed or quality. Very Happy! I got two one for FW800 chain, and one for my Thunderbolt 2 G Drive.
Wasn’t sure what I would have to do to get a 27” Thunderbolt Display and a MacBook Pro 13” M1 working together. This is all that was needed. It’s a bit on the expensive side but works great so far. All I had to do was connect the adapter and insert the cable and they both recognize each other.
Works Perfectly
The adapter works perfectly to connect Apple Thunderbolt Display to M1 Pro MacBook Pro.
Cable Works
I use this to interface my new Focusrite Clarett 2Pre (Thunderbolt 2) to my new 2016 MacBook Pro (Thunderbolt 3) for audio processing. I am not sure if this is an active or passive adapter but it works for my purposes.
