Make sure you cool this thing well, the like to run warm out of the box. That being said..My 2 year old Gigabyte Aorus B450 Elite with 64GB of 2667-DDR4 running a Ryzen 7 2700 (8-core 16-thread) assembled genomes at 50% of the speed using the number cores against my Gigabyte Aorus X570 Pro Wi-Fi...

It’s a beast. Watch your PCIe settings in BIOS though. On initial AMD 5,000 series installs, I’ve been getting the VGA light. (X570 & B550 boards). This has happened to me a few times now. It’s only on new builds. The fix is to put the old cpu in and change the PCIe setting in BIOS.

My first CPU was riddled with random WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE BSODs and random reboots. After a massive troubleshooting headache I RMA'ed the CPU to AMD. The replacement is now running perfectly. AMD really needs to get their QC figured out. They seem to have let a lot of bad chips out the door.

So this processor is very different in a lot of ways. First off, it is overkill for almost everyone. But is performs and does well when you do find things to use it for. What is different is the ability for this processor to up the power budget and light it on fire.

This chip is a massive beast. It will make your ram and ssd feel slow with how quickly it tears through workloads. I use it for statistical analysis and for encoding video and the integer performance is absolutely incredible. Works out of the box on Ubuntu 20.10 without any issues.
