IJ Utility Scan inferior to CanoScan Toolbox 5.0
We replaced a 600F with this 400. The scanner is more awkward to use, but acceptable. The IJ Scan Utility though is far inferior to the earlier CanoScan Toolbox 5.0. In the Toolbox all the settings I change regularly, mode, scan type and output file name are on one pop-up, not on a layer below.

Good value for money
A lightweight, practical scanner that scans professional illustrations (watercolours, pen-and-ink) in good detail. It lacks a white point/black point option in the scan customisation program to make it truly perfect, but otherwise excellent value for money.

Perfect, 200+ photos scanned
I'm using this to digitize old (some 90 years old) photos. Depending on size, I can scan up to 4 at a time. Using Image Capture on my Mac, it is simple to crop and rotate, and select a save to folder. 600 dpi seems to be adequate; good resolution, but reasonable file size.

Works well. Nice image quality. Compact
I like Canon software. However, the manual might be improved. Was trying to create individual files for images on an album page with black background sheets. It can be done but I never could have figured it out without calling support. Otherwise would be 5 stars.

This could not be easier, replacing my Canon 200 scanner. Plugged in the CD, waited as it accessed the Internet and gathered whatever it needed, then WHEN INSTRUCTED, plugged in the scanner. My Windows 10 system immediately recognized the scanner, it was immediately operational, it scans perfectly.
